Sažetak
In the last couple of years several books have been published where Croatian is described from a new angle: based on recent linguistic theories and using a new research methodology. Also, new topics were introduced in Croatian linguistics, i.e. computational linguistics, first and second language acquisition, etc. Although the new trends are noticeable in various linguistic fields, for example dialectology, history of language, standardology or language teaching, the most significant are the novelties in the description of the structure of the Croatian language. In the last three years for all the components of the Croatian language, that is phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicology, a new, comprehensive description has been made. In her book “ Fonološki opis hrvatskoga jezika” (Phonological description of the Croatian language, 2005), Z. Jelaska deals with Croatian sounds, syllables and accents from various perspectives. She also proposes a new Croatian phonological terminology. In 2006 J. Silić and I. Pranjković published a new grammar of the Croatian language “ Gramatika hrvatskoga jezika” that encompasses their fruitful academic work. Comparing to the other grammars of the Croatian language, Silić and Pranjković’ s book shows lots of differences and novelties, especially in the description of Croatian morphology and syntax. Also, Silić and Pranjković introduce the description of various functional styles of standard Croatian. When talking about lexicology, there are at least two books that introduced new topics in Croatian linguistics. B. Petrović (“ Sinonimija i sinonimičnost u hrvatskome jeziku” , 2005) investigates synonymy and synonimity in Croatian and proposes a model for a future Croatian dictionary of synonyms. A. Hoyt’ s book (“ Konceptualna leksikografija: prema tezaurusu hrvatskoga jezika” , 2004) deals with conceptual lexicography. The author also set a theoretical base for compiling a thesaurus of the Croatian language. This paper deals with the novelties that the aforementioned books bring in the description of the Croatian language and Croatian linguistics in general. It will be also discussed whether the new findings and approaches can be used as a base for description of Croatian to non-native speakers.
