Sažetak
Two cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), diagnosed in Croatia in 2002, were investigated. In addition to published sequences of N, M and H genes (Virus Res, 99, 2004), the complete coding regions of P, F and L genes were sequenced following direct RT-PCR of viral RNA extracted from brain tissue. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequences of H and N genes, showed that both strains belonged to genotype D6. The comparison of analyzed sequences of two SSPE causative viruses with each other and with sequence of possible progenitor (measles virus prevailing in Europe at roughly the same time as the primary infection) revealed a number of mutation. The M and F gene of the SSPE viruses showed a premature termination codon in one of the patients.
