IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE DEPTH OF HADENING WHEN GAS QUENCHING LARGER WORKPIECE CROSS-SECTIONS OF ADEQUATE HARDENABILITY, OR HARDENING STEELS OF LOWER HARDENABILITY, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY DECREASE THERMAL/RESIDUAL STRESSES, A NEW CONTROLLABLE HEAT EXTRACTION TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN PROPOSED. THE RELATION BETWEEN HEAT TRANSFER AND TRANSFORMATION KINETICS, AS BASIS OF THIS TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN EXPLAINED. TO PROVE THE EFFECT OF THIS TECHNOLOGY ON POSSIBLE INCREASSE OF THE DEPTH OF HARDENING, A METHOD FOR CHARACTERISING THE QUENCHING INTENSITY OF GASES UNDER DIFFERENT CONDITIONS AND ADEQUATE TESTING DEVICE, WAS USED. THE PRESENTED RESULTS OF PERFORMED EXPERIMENTS HAVE SHOWN REMARKABLE INCREASE OF THE DEPTH OF HARDENING, COMPARED TO NORMAL GAS QUENCHING PRACTICE.
