Sažetak
The authors argue that the performance of a multiprocessor system depends on how it handles the key problems of control, partitioning, scheduling, synchronization, and memory access. There are four schools of thought as to what is the most important factor in obtaining order-of-magnitude higher performance. The first believes in faster circuit technology, which will allow present architectures, possibly augmented with a mechanism for synchronizing parallel processes, to be retained. The second puts priority on optimizing or vectorizing compilers, possibly interactive, that will detect parallelism and help users to write better parallel programs. The third believes that a dramatic increase in performance will come mainly from new parallel algorithms, so it supports development of new languages that will allow easy conversion of algorithms into programs. The fourth supports new models of computation, such as data flow models, that will allow dramatic increases in parallelism and can be easily exploited by a multiprocessor architecture to increase performance. The authors maintain that only efficient solutions of the above problems will bring an order-of-magnitude improvement in supercomputer performance. They discuss each of these problems and their implemented or proposed solutions.
