Sažetak
In this paper the review of results of research in the field of aerodynamic stability is presented, based on the worlds longest ever spans of bridges made in Japan at the end of the 20th century. These spans are of the Akashi Kaikyo suspension bridge between Honshu and Awaji island near Kobe, completed in 1998, and the Tatara cable-stayed bridge on the Onomichi-Imabari route, completed in May of 1999. The results of wind tunnel testing, vibration testing conducted after the completion of structures in order to compare the measured with the calculated eigenvalues, implementation of the Tuned Mass Dampers as well as theoretical research in aerodynamics for cross sections and full scale of the stiffening girders and the towers (pylons) based on Japan’ s experiences, is presented in this paper. New control system for flutter suppression consists of pendulum mechanism and additional control surfaces attached to the bridge deck, as well as the possibility of implementation of gyroscopes is also discussed
