Sažetak
In our study we investigated the incidence of vertebral column deformities in farmed and wild common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) reared under same conditions. Fish were taken from the fish farm “ Belje” Darda, Croatia. For determination of vertebral column deformities, 20 wild common carps 14.0 - 25.5 cm long and 57 farmed common carps 13.5 - 23.4 cm long were sampled randomly. Their body length was measured from the top of the head to the front edge of the caudal fin (SL). The segment that begins with the anal fin and stretches to the end of the caudal fin was taken as the caudal part of vertebra. Each fish was x-rayed in profile (latero-lateral) position, using a 30x40 cm X-ray film. X-ray screening of common carp showed vertebral column deformities only in farmed common carp. Vertebral column deformities were determined in 22.8% of 57 examined common carp. Deformities were found at the caudal part of vertebrae (76.92%) and trunk part of vertebrae (23.07%). Types of deformities were different depending on the vertebral part. The caudal part deformities were of the lordosis type, and 60% of deformities were located between the 1st and 4th caudal vertebra. The trunk part deformities showed vertebral fusion only. Vertebral column deformities were determined only in farmed common carp. Since no deformities were found in any of the wild common carp, it could be concluded that vertebral column deformities in examined farmed common carp could be of genetic origin. Mistakes in selection and choice of broodstock could lead to above mentioned deformities and could exert a direct negative impact on breeding values as well as incidence of certain diseases.
