Sažetak
The study was designed to evaluate phagocytosis in 22 Papillary Thyroid Cancer (PTC) patients (mean age 42 yrs, 20 female) who have been postoperatively treated with I-131 for thyroid remnant ablation (mean dose 3.5 GBq). The number of leukocytes, and the proportion and absolute number of granulocytes (GR) and monocytes (MO), as well as their phagocytic functions have been studied. In all 22 patients (group A) assessments were made 4 weeks after surgery but before I-131 treatment. Assessments were repeated in 17 of these patients (group B) 3 months after I-131 ablation. Control measurements were performed in 74 healthy volunteers. Absolute number (P=0.025) of MO was decreased in group A in relation to controls. GR ingestion (P=0.053) and microbicidity (P<0.001), and MO phagocytic activity (P=0.012) and MO ingestion (P=0.003) were decreased in group A in relation to controls. There was no single difference recorded between groups A and B. Presented results show that immunological alterations are present early in the disease process (group A). Consequently, impaired immunological parameters detected in group B in relation to controls, could not be attributed to effect of I-131.
