Sažetak
The increase in the traffic volume in the future requires greater participation of the railways in the transportation of passengers and goods. This requires faster development of railways by its restructuring and elimination of the existing drawbacks. The work analyzes possible railway development directions within the framework of the European development plans. Special focus is placed on the possible improvements in passenger and cargo traffic. The already achieved good results in single segments of railway traffic are taken into consideration and the guidelines are given for further development on the European level, principally harmonized with the national plans of railway development. The analysis includes the development of infrastructure, railway vehicles, ETCS-based safety system, information and communication system, train movement control, wagon tracking and electronic processing of lading bills when crossing borders.
