Sažetak
This report describes and evaluates issues and solutions that came up in the design and implementation of dynamic HTTP protocols for wireless devices that make use of the J2ME technology as the software development platform. The primary incentive behind this research has been to incorporate the compression and decompression of HTTP headers and payload data into the HTTP class hierarchy and investigate the transparency level of a particular solution to the application programmer, the provider of system classes, and the application manager. Three compression algorithms have been compared and one compression protocol has been implemented and tested in terms of processing power, memory footprint, and compression efficiency. In addition, the possibilities for a separate downloading of applications and communication protocols as well as the interaction among applications and their components have been investigated. To validate the design choices several experimental prototypes have been implemented and evaluated using a selected development environment and a device emulator.
