Sažetak
The role of echocardiography in the assessment of left ventricular function is well established, and has been expanded over the last few years depend with the development of new technologies. Echocardiography can assess LV global and regional function, as well as systolic and diastolic function. It has the possibility to measure volumes, including cardiac output, pressures, left ventricular mass, dP/dt from mitral regurgitant jet. It can also assess regional LV function using the wall motion score (hyperkinetic, normal, hypokinetic, akinetic, dyskinetic). All these methods have been used in several clinical studies and have proved to be clinically useful. Therefore, new methodologies have been recently developed to increase accuracy in echo diagnosis. These include the introduction of second harmonics, which is becoming a standard in most equipments: the use contrast echo to improve LV opacification and endocardial border definition, color kinesis and acoustic quantification, which allows automated segmental analysis, tissue Doppler imaging, which can help in the assessment of systolic and diastolic function, myocardial performance index (MPI) combining the measurement of systolic and diastolic performance, and more recently the ability to assess strain and strain rate. Left ventricular function assessment in different kinds of cardiovascular patients is of vital importance in clinical decision-making and is related closely to prognosis. In conclusion, accurate assessment of left ventricular function is one of the most important clinical aplications of echocardiography.
