Sažetak
Depression in oncology patients is common, but underdiagnosed. Current estimates are that 25% of those patients meet diagnostic criteria for major depression. Depression adversly affects patients quality of life, the ability to care for oneself, compliance with therapy and the lenght of hospital stay. It affects even the prognosis and mortality. Immunological and endocrinological aspects of depression and its connection to cancer are discussed. A large proportion of published empirical data suggests that religious commitment may play a beneficial role in preventing depression and physical illness and facilitate recovery. It may be useful in managing depression in patients with cancer and augment their quality of life. Clinicians should be avere of those potencials. Those issues are reviewed and discussed.
