Sažetak
The concept of a product - creation of the mind ("brainchild" or "mental product" - can be realised through adequate matters (substances) or materials. This defines the basic function of the material. It enables the idea of product to be materialised at the same time connecting the two basic fields of human activities, design and production. Latest experiences have provided examples of metals, polymers and ceramics, which prove the interdependence of design, material technics and production. The considerations have a double objective: scientific-professional and pedagogical. Among other things, the growing tendency to develop materials simultaneously with the macro-geometrical shape of the product is stressed, resulting in the closest co-operation between the process engineer and the manufacturing engineer. At the same time, it is to be emphasised that product designers need to know the material technics, and the material engineers other mentioned fields.
