Sažetak
Knowing the composition and thickness of pavement layers is essential in the pavement management system. The application of this knowledge unquestionably increases the efficiency of investments through the implementation of a systematic and timely approach to maintenance. The use of reliable and realistic models of pavement behaviour enables predictions of the future pavement condition under the influence of various factors and measures of maintenance based on knowledge of the current condition. Defining clear and unambiguous models of pavement behaviour is only possible with the application of sufficiently reliable input parameters, including the composition and thickness of pavement layers. Typically, the existing project plans and data obtained in field testing and core sampling form the basic sources of information for collecting data on the composition and thickness of pavement layers. However, data from the project plans can differ substantially from the actual situation on the road. On the other hand, data obtained in core sampling are precise but are point data, characteristic only for a certain location while variations in the area between two cores can be significant. Furthermore, such a method of collecting data requires large financial resources, a long data collection period and temporary road closures. The application of a non-destructive testing method, the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can provide continuous data on the composition and thickness of pavement layers. This paper presents the possibility of improving databases of road surface management systems using the said device. The advantages and disadvantages are presented, as are the possibility of applying this method of collecting data on the composition and thickness of pavement surface layers for the purpose of building a database on pavement constructions within the pavement management system.
