Sažetak
The concept on geographic distribution on multiple sclerosis (MS) worldwide, general maps based on it, as well as hypothetic attitudes at the outstanding authors (Alter 1962 ; Kurtzke 1966 ; etc.) suggest that both Yugoslavia and Balkan Peninsula as a whole are the area of low to moderate prevalence. The existing reports on MS epidemiology in Yugoslavia, although still insufficient number is available, do not always support the attitude. Thus, in Istria, MS prevalence is estimated to be 24.95/100.000. Epidemiologic studies of northern and mittle Adriatic litoral areas showed high prevalence of 35.5/100.000 (Rijeka) and 30.2/100.000 in the middle part of the adriatic coast (Split). At the south, in Herceg-Novi (Montenegro) a prevalence rate of 44/100.000 has been found, confirming the previous finding of high prevalence of MS along the eastern adriatic coast. In a limited population in Zagreb we found a prevalence rate of 40/100.000. In the northern plains of Yugoslavia (Backa) the prevalence 33.8/100.000 was found. In the central part of Serbia (Šumadija and Pomoravlje) the prevalence rate was 20, 3/100.000, while in southern part of Macedonia the estimated prevalence rate was 19.4/100.000. A premilinary study of MS in Bijelo Polje, a community in northern mountainous parts of Montenegro, has shown an unexpectedly high prevalence rate of 76.5/100.000.
