Sažetak
Consolidation settlements of structures founded on problematic soils are often large and potentially damaging to structures. In the paper described is the construction and monitoring of the embankment under difficult subsoil condition on the island of Pag. The behaviour of the embankment was improved by laying a geotextile on the sea bottom before putting on boulders. After twenty years the portion of the embankment above the deepest weak layer settled more than one meter. In spite of this and of heavier traffic during the recent war, no instability phenomena were observed, which proved that the laying of fabric is an efficient technique of passing the difficult subsoil conditions. An attempt is made to numerically model the consolidation and settlement of the embankment. In prediction of the final amount of settlement and rate of consolidation of the soil layer for various depths, nonuniform strain profile effects were taken into account.
