Sažetak
Croatian Armed Forces need modernisation of their equipment, and this is based on the fact that most of the equipment is obsolete, worn out and that number of main combat systems is inadequate. Besides, military equipment of eastern origin is not compatible with NATO standards thus making interoperability of Croatian units in PfP and NATO operations difficult. In order to reduce technological stagnation and maintain pace with international co-operation, modernisation is required. This modernisation could be achieved by procurement from the market or by research and development and domestic production. Modernisation could also be performed by upgrading of the existing equipment. Based on the Proposal of Strategy of Technological Modernisation of Croatian Armed Forces, this article proposes appropriate organisation of R&D in support of modernisation. R&D organisation is based on the principle of complementarity of efforts with institutions outside MoD and provides systematic solution. In transitional environment the role of R&D organisation will become more important than ever because it should provide high-quality analytical and technical support to key MoD and Armed Forces personnel in charge of modernisation planning and decision-making.
