Sažetak
The colloquium discusses burning issues: Are World Englishes creating a climate of us speakers of English as a second or foreign language, and them speakers of English as a native language? DoWorld Englishes unite speakers or divide them? The colloquium stresses the importance of creating teacher awareness of the status and functions of World Englishes. The increased attention pressures English language teachers to not only familiarise themselves with the issues but also to integrate them in teaching – and this is an extra responsibility for over-burden teachers. Kachru and Nelson’ s (2001) circles model of the global situation of English has become the widely accepted standard framework of World Englishes studies. The model divides English speakers into three groups: the inner circle English as a native language, the outer circle English as a second language, and the expanding circle English as a foreign language. The colloquium discusses burning issues: Are World Englishes bringing speakers together or are they dividing speakers into us speakers of English as a second or foreign language, and them speakers of English as a native language?
