Sažetak
Shrublands which contain broadleaved sclerosphyllous evergreen shrubs are a common type of vegetation in countries around Mediterranean basin, including the Adriatic littoral of Croatia. They represent traditional grazing areas and are important sources of forage for livestock, particularly during the dry summer, but their use is often limited by condensed tannins, toxic compounds that adversely affect forage intake and animal health. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has a high affinity for binding condensed tannins and thus prevents the formation tannins-proteins complexes, attenuating their aversive effects by increasing intake of high-tannins foods and improves performance in a variety of species. PEG does not appear to affect digestion and can be added as supplement feed to ruminants as a means for eliminating condensed tannins affect (Provenza et al., 2000). The objectives of this study were to determine how macronutrients (barley), PEG and tannins affected preference of the dominant shrubby species of the Mediterranean maquis (shrubs offered together) by sheep and goats. Likewise, the objectives include the importance of the varied shrubs selection (biochemical diversity) and affect of the supplemental PEG/barley to shrubs intake. Sheep and goats can be used as an environmentally safe and economically sounds means to reduce the abundance of tannin-rich vegetation. Macronutrients and PEG enhance use of tannin-containing plants, which may increase production of alternate forages and create a more diverse mix of species in a plant community
