Sažetak
The paper discusses logistics as being a factor of relevance to seaports. Attention is drawn to how a port is a significant link in the transport chain. However, it does not have a decesive role, but acts as a very important interface in the dispatch and reception of transported goods. The port has to meet specific and various requirements of commodity owners, all kinds of transporters, as well as the environment, since a port is more or less a part of the urban tissue. A special emphasis was given to the structure of transports costs out of which it is visible that the portion of direct costs of a port is lower than the costs of the continental transport and especially maritime. If we add to this indirect costs originating in a port, and which are a part of the cost structure of the carrier than a port is also a very important part of the transport chain in relation to the costs. Continual changes in relation to the procedures and different relationships between activities in the transport of goods from the sender to the reciever which is specially emphasized in the connection of previously individual and unconnected operations into the unique traffic and transport procedure, also gives new possibilities for the development of ports. Modern ports are changing their orientations and they are becoming distribution and logistics centers. In ports we plan, organize, manage and control the flow of goods and information within the local, regional, national and international borders. The ports are becoming more attractive for goods and they are more profitable due to the enhanced quality of services. Further to this they also have more stronger basis for the future improvements in relation to traffic techniques and engineering, technologies, knowledge, information system and new and more complex and even more demanding logistics functions which are a very significant factor for the operations and development of any port.
