Sažetak
Analysis of land use changes is very important for a proper evaluation of developments in areas of special interest. Results of such analysis are a good basis for further planning. In order for research to be conducted, spatially correct data for the period of interest have to be available. We usually need data about land use before developments and changes of natural environment have started. The available data are aerial photographs and topographic maps. Wetlands are very important natural habitats and areas essential for the preservation of rlch biodiversity. Such areas are also very interesting in terms of different usage of natural resources, for instance for agriculture, fishing and tourism. Wetlands are especially important in the Mediterranean region where only few are preserved. This paper aims at describing land use changes in the Neretva Delta. For that purpose, interpretation of historical topographic and thematic maps and photointerpretation of the recent aerial photographs have been performed. Using GIS, thematic maps of the Lower Neretva were created and they will certainly play a crucial role in monitoring changes in this area. The results have shown the reduction of natural wetlands and increase in ameliorated agricultural land, which again change landscape and result in loss of biodiversity.
