Sažetak
During preparatory work for the exhibition “ Albrecht Dürer” in 2003 in the Albertina, Vienna, micro X-ray fluorescence analyses (μ -XRF) were carried out on a number of artefacts. By means of a portable μ -XRF instrument, pigments, drawing materials and inks were analysed non-destructively on site in the Albertina. A measuring spot of only c. 100 μ m in diameter allowed a very precise analysis of the drawing media. The results show that the green and blue-coloured areas analysed in the watercolours “ A Dead Blue Roller” and “ Wing of a Roller” contain Cu and Pb, suggesting that the green and blue pigments were malachite or verdigris and azurite respectively, and the white pigment used was lead white. The red colour used for the feathers and monogram in the work “ Wing of a Roller” appears to be an organic colour. Of primary interest for conservators was the composition of Dürer’ s drawing inks ; tests on “ Dürer’ s Wife Agnes” , “ The Small Triumphal Chariot” , and “ Antwerp Harbour” identified iron gall inks with varying proportions of Cu and Zn to Fe. In some cases, carbon ink was used either as a main drawing medium, as in “ The Lamentation” , or as minor constituent mixed with the iron gall ink.
