Sažetak
During a recent investigation of the Jadova River in the Lika region of Croatia, individuals belonging to a species of the genus Cobitis were recorded as being present. Detailed morphometric measurements on 14 individuals of varying size were conducted and the results compared with measures of other Cobitis species in Croatia. Based on morphological differences found, it was concluded that the Cobitis found in the Jadova River differs from all other species described to date. This conclusion was then verified through mtDNA analysis. All individuals bear a dark mark (thick line) on the upper side of the caudal peduncle, with a lighter spot underneath this. The lighter spot is usually larger than the dark mark and is situated under the 4th Gambetta zone. The morphometric ratios that show a statistically significant difference in this species as compared to other related species are: ratio of standard length with length of caudal peduncle, length of dorsal fin basis, length of anal fin basis and body width ; ratio of head length/head width, head length/postocular length and the ratio of eye diameter/interocular distance. Due to all the listed differences, we consider this to be a new species that should be called Cobitis jadovae.
