Sažetak
According to gender stereotype (Oglesby & Hill, 1993) combat sports are exemplary male activities. Perceived as aggressive and dominance-oriented, combat sports are often treated as inappropriate to female participants (Plaisted, 1995). The aim of this work is to establish the differences in general attitude toward combat sports in boys and girls of different age. The sample of this research consists of 196 female and 194 male urban elementary school pupils aged 11 to 15 years. At the regular physical education classes subjects were given General attitude toward combat sports scale (Bosnar, Sertić & Prot, 1996). Sample was divided in four age groups, under 12, 12 to 13 years, 13 to 14 years and over 14 years. Using total result in attitude scale, univariate two-factor analysis of variance was done, with factors defined by gender and age. Gender and the interaction of two factors show statistical significance at the level p<0.01, and p<0.02, respectively. However, factor of age proves to be statistically insignificant. As expected, boys show positive attitude of higher intensity than girls do in all age groups. In males, quantitative values are high and almost the same in the four age groups. In females, the values are much lower and almost identical for the first three age groups, but show high rise in eldest group being only slightly lower than male result. The rise of intensity of positive attitude toward combat sports in over-14 age female group corresponds to mid-adolescence entering, and can be a mild form of rebellion against conventional values (Papalia & Olds, 1992). Also, fourteen is the age when decreasing of conformity is found in girls (Constanzo & Shaw, 1966) which can explain distancing from former recognized stereotyped attitude.
