Sažetak
The thesis deals with the analysis of discourse in Oscar Wild's play The Importance of Being Earnest. The analysis is based on Austin's theory of speech acts and Grice's theory of conversational implicature. It shows that the characters’ personalities and manners can be seen in their use of speech acts and in their violation of particular maxims. It tries to explain the motivations for using certain types of speech acts and reasons for breaking the maxims. It also attempts to make evident various implicatures that may arise from the flouting of maxims, and to reveal how they bring about the effect of irony.
