Sažetak
The thesis deals with expansion and contraction of translation units in translations of literary texts from English into Croatian and viceversa. These phenomena result from transpositions, i.e. the translation strategy which includes transforming and supplementing. Transforming is manifested in two ways: transposition of nouns into clauses in which the semantic content of the noun is expressed by a verb form resulting in the expansion of the translation unit ; conversely, transposition of different types of clauses into a noun or a noun phrase resulting in the contraction of translation unit. In the second process, i.e. supplementing the source structure does not contain a form which can be transformed into a verb form so that the verb has to be supplemented according to 'world knowledge'.
