Sažetak
The main aim of this paper is to analyse civil society development in Croatia through path dependency approach and in that way assess social capital formation. Some relevant indicators of social capital in transitional countries will be used for the purpose of comparisons. Civil society as a concept of transitional societies’ modernization has an option to become a part of mainstream development. Civic culture and civic initiatives are very much limited by given society structure, culture, tradition, religion etc. Citizens associate with a people they know or they are part of brother family. Bonding social capital predominates in these types of citizens associations. Using path dependency approach from recent studies of civil society development in transitional countries paper analyse three scopes of civil society development in Croatia. In the first scope local, endogenous civil initiatives with real interests and needs of local citizens will be analysed using results of different empirical research. Indications show that civil society is partly rooted in local communities where citizens have real interest to be engaged Civil society as a part of massive offer of international and foreign organisation creates specific type of civil society and social capital relevant for process of globalisation. Civil society in this concept in part of general import from developed world. Empirical evidence for this part of analysis is rather limited and findings are from case studies. Governmental funding programmes give the new space for “ statehood” civil society development. Cliental and politically dependent civil society development foster disintegration of society and strengthen logic of “ political society” created by political parties. For this part of analysis nature of empirical evidence is more qualitative than quantitative.
