Sažetak
Objective:Cancer incidence and mortality rates are constantly increasing in Croatia, despite of numerous preventive actions taken by non-governmental organizations and professional societies. Methods:Therefore, the Croatian Oncology Society of the Croatian Medical Association, with support of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, prepared a Draft National Program for Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer. Results: Primary prevention is based on actions that should result in reduced smoking, increased physical activity and improved diet. Early detection of cancer focuses on the following cancer sites: -Breast - mammography, double reading for women aged 56-64, every two years ; -Uterine cervix - Papanicolau (smear) test for women aged 25-64 once a year ; liquid cytology and HPV test for women aged 31-64 every five years, and for women aged 25-30 every three years ; -Colon - feacal-ocult-blood testing (FOBT) of men and women aged 50 and over once a year or every two years. -Prostate - digitorectal examination, PSA, and FPSA tests for men aged 40 and over with at least one blood relative (father, grandfather, brothers) that had or has prostate cancer, and for men aged 50 and over with symptoms of prostatism.
