Sažetak
Capital market in Croatia is continuously going through significant changes whose goal is to more quickly and more efficiently approach the standards dictated by the European Union and the more advanced western markets. Globalization process has affected all the forms of institutional activities, which influenced forming of a new unique institution for supervision of overall financial services on capital market (insurance companies, pension funds, commission for securities), and thus it influenced creation of a completely new order and system of responsibility. During 2003 a quotation of public shareholding company was formed at both Croatian stock exchanges (Zagrebačka and Varaždinska stock exchange). This influenced the increase of trading standards, data transparency, and mostly it had an influence on quicker recognition and acceptance of principles of corporate governance. Acceptance of principles of corporate governance is key for quickened growth of capital market, and also for country's economical development. This paper analyses position of Zagrebačka and Varaždinska stock exchange in relation to stock exchanges of transition countries, and gives comparative analysis of securities stock exchanges according to key indicators (turnover, number of shares, number of transactions, market capitalization, gross domestic product, market capitalization/ GDP). Position analysis of stock exchange in Croatia, in context of regional development, is being viewed with regards to acceptance and compatibility to principles of corporate governance proposed by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
