Sažetak
The book is a collection of works on the theme of media literacy. The term media literacy is connected with the activities of UNESCO in the area of communication that ware initiated during the 1980es. The development of media technology and media industry, commercialization and market journalism resulted in violation of the communication rights of children, that ware guaranteed by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in the Art. 13 and 17. This book publishes articles of experts from several countries. These experts coming from different theoretical and professional backgrounds analyse how media influence children, what is the harmful media content and what is the role of civil society in development of professional media ethics, self-regulation and media laws. The book stresses the importance of development of cognitive, aesthetic, philosophical and ethical deliberations about the media, with the aim of stimulating critical reception of media content by the children. It presents examples that testify to the importance of civil society associations in creation of the media strategy that would be best suited to regulate excessive violence in the media, uncontrolled advertising and media stereotypes. The book is a manual for the students of media literacy, an optional subject at the Department of Information and Communication Science of the University of Zadar.
