Sažetak
The results of a three year joint international project by Univ. of Georgia, Univ. of Zagreb (with the participation of members of the " Ivo Pilar" Institute) and NGO ICAM on sustainable rural economic revitalization in Croatia are discussed. The aim was the introduction and adoption of the University of Georgia model of "Outreach and Public Service" at the University of Zagreb in order to provide the future institutional support for regional development and local communities. To establish the scope of institutional involvement and support the project developed a case study with the local government of the Žumberak region in which the possibilities of a multi-sector partnership were explored. What the project actually served to do was to indicate the important institutional changes that would first have to occur at UZ to allow these "outreach activities" to have support and financing. These necessary institutional changes would be required to help alter the university culture to not only embrace and reward traditional teaching and research, but would create the institutional mechanisms to allow and endorse UZ to actively engage in organized applied research, technical assistance, and consultation activities that would positively improve the lives of the people, governments, and businesses in Croatia.
