Sažetak
Historical enlargement of the EU was a result of numerous benefits anticipated for old and new member countries. The authors investigate the influence of enlargement on the EU development, improving competitiveness, labour market and budgetary expenditures for new members. The EU will not be able to compete at the world market without greater investments into education, science, patents stimulation and developed financial markets, especially since the US and Japan are already way ahead of the EU. Thus, the path of development in not easy but with efforts form all members in problem solving and their support to common goals and actions, the EU could surely realize its ideas and survive as one the most important players at the world market.
