Sažetak
Tambura is a longneck lute-like instrument. It was brought to the Balkans by the Turks in the 14th and 15th centuries. Due to migration of population from Bosnia and Serbia to the Slavonia region (eastern part of Croatia) in the 18th and 19th centuries, tambura became the most prominent instrument of the region. In the beginning it was played as a solo instrument (samica), but at the end of 18th century there were first tamburica ensembles, and later also tamburica orchestras. During the Croatian national renaissance in the mid 19th century tambura was raised to the level of a Croatian and South Slavic national instrument, and tamburica orchestras were very popular. Revival of tambura music, and tambura as a symbol of Croatian national identity was in the 1990s ? ; during the War of Independence and the period when Croatia was recognized as an independent country, but this time were tamburica ensembles the carrier of the popularity. In this paper, I would like to present this double life of tamburica ? ; as an orchestral instrument, with a "classical" repertoire, and as instrument in an ensemble with "entertaining" repertoire, and the life and repertoire of tambura today in Croatia.
