Sažetak
Republic of Croatia is a central European and Mediterranean country located on the Adriatic Sea covering an area of 56, 538 square kilometres. According to the last population census from 2001 Croatia had 4.437, 460 million inhabitants. Croatia is among the leading European and world countries according to the total renewable water resources. It is the third in Europe with 32, 818 m3/inhabitant/year and the thirtieth in the world. At the same time, the areas under water management are scarce. Although Croatia has abundant groundwater resources, widespread hydrographical net and immense potentials for irrigation, water management systems are built only on 7, 000 acres of agricultural areas. As Croatia has been affected by frequent and longer droughts in the last decade, the lack of irrigated areas became one of the most important issues. The use of groundwater resources for irrigation depends on geographical distribution and groundwater capacity. Significant groundwater resources are situated in the karst region of western and southern Croatia where agricultural areas are affected by long droughts during summer period. In the continental part of Croatia where intensive farming prevails, the lack of irrigation systems also causes damage to crops. Since 1990s many agricultural areas in Croatia have been abandoned or unusable due to war activities, land mines and the transition from real-socialist planned to market economy. The main producers were the big state agricultural conglomerates who ceased to exist. Privatisation and division of land into small lots became the break point for further development of irrigation systems. Today, organised systems for irrigation can be built only with the help of private investments and local communities, who should recognise their importance for the agriculture in Croatia.
