Sažetak
Over a dozen Mesolithic cave and open-air aites have been recently excavated in Istria, Croatia as part of the project "Paleolithic and Mesolithic settlements in the Northern Adriatic". Late Upper Paleolithic cave sites are found only on the edge of upland karstic areas ; regular upland settlement starts in the early Mesolithic period. Mesolithic upland sites are located in particular environments, such as natural passages into highland territories, canyons and close occupational refuse. Lithic assemblages and habitation evidence from several Mesolithic caves and open-air sites are analysed and compared in order to establish the chronological framework and variability in site type and function. From these data we infer strategies and patterns of upland colonization and use in relation to lowland sites and regional settlement systems.
