Sažetak
Background: Little is known about clinical features and management of the patients with pineal gland cyst, especially those with epilepsy. Until now there are no exact data of usability of TCS (transcranial sonography) in the evaluation ofthe pineal region. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate clinical symptoms in patients with pineal cyst and to compare them with size and TCS findings of the cyst. Patients and methods: We analyzed 10 patients (7 female and 3 male) aged 4 to 33 years diagnosed with pineal cyst found as the only pathology on the MRI (magnetic resonance) and were focused mainly on epilepsy as the presenting symptom. We cumpared symptoms of those patients with dimensions of the pineal cyst and TCS findings. Results: Epilepsy was the presenting symptom in 7 patients (absence in 2, grand mal in 2 and partial complex seizures in 3 patients), dizziness in 1 and headache in 2 patients. All the patients with epilepsy had abnormal epileptic EEG recordings. After administration of AET (antiepileptic therapy) epileptic seizures were stabilized in all patients. The dimensions of the pineal cyst on MRI varied from 3.Sx5 to 17x10mm. TCS showed a hypoechogenic septated cyst in 2 patients, a hypoechogenic oval cyst in 5 patients, a hyperechogenic ovoid cyst in 2 and a hyperechogenic lobulated cyst in 2 patients. Conclusion: Epilepsy is a less common clinical feature of the pineal cyst. In our patients epilepsy was stabilized by AET. No connection could be made between symptoms and size or TCS findings of the pineal cyst.
