Sažetak
Aim: To evaluate the frequency of vertebral artery occlusion in stroke patients, as well as to get insight to the vertebral occlusion as an isolated feature or connected with carotid stenosis. Material and methods: The incidence of occluded vertebral arteries in 140 stroke patients treated in the Department of Neurology in a one-year period was evaluated. The results of the following investigations performed in all patients were reviewed: clectrocardiogram, brain computed tomography (CT), color Doppler and power Doppler of carotid (CDFI, PD) and vertebral arteries. The risk factors were assessed by lipidogram, blood glucose, presence of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. A standard insonation protocol was employed to visualize carotid and VA using CDFI and PD. The following criteria were used for extracranial VA occlusion: positive vessel identification between spinal processes, visualization of the vessel lumen absent CDFI and/or PD flow.
