Sažetak
The objective of this research was evaluation of positive effect and reliability of yield and quality traits as selection criteria in alfalfa breeding programs. Two-year research (2002 and 2003) was located on the experimental field of Institute of Agriculture in Osijek and carried out on Panonian alfalfa ecotype. Average value, variability coefficient, correlation and path coefficient were evaluated per plants with regard to the following traits: yield and yield components as well as quality traits (protein content, dry matter, fibre, and ash content as well as leaf-to-stem ratio). Variability coefficient was high for yield components and yield while quality traits showed relatively low variation. Positive and significant relations were established between yield and its components (height, number of stems, regeneration). Protein content was in a positive correlation with leaf-to-stem ratio while correlation with protein content was very negative and justifiable. Path coefficient indicates a strong direct effect of height on yield (0, 57**) as well as a very negative direct effect of fibre content on protein content (-0, 66**).
