Sažetak
The presentation first offers a background to the Croatian introduction of English in Grade 1. This includes a brief description of results of studies into teaching young learners during the 1970s and as part of a 10-year research project that systematically investigated early learning of four foreign languages (English, French, German, Italian). The process of curriculum design is described as well as learning outcomes of two generations of young learners that were taught according to the curriculum. This is followed by the list of key factors that were found to be crucial for drawing up the curriculum for early learning of English. Experience with Croatian-made textbooks and with international teaching materials are described. The presentation ends with a comment on the present situation in Croatia, where the first foreign language became compulsory part of the primary curriculum in 2003.
