Sažetak
Giardiasis is common cause of diarrheal disease in almost all vertebrates, including humans. The taxonomy of Giardia duodenalis (syn. G. lamblia or G. intestinalis) at the species level is complicated and still not completely resolved because of limited morphological differences. The development of molecular tools for characterizing isolates of Giardia duodenalis morphological group showed species complexity comprising a series of host-adapted genotypes ( assemblages C, E, F and G) and two zoonotic genotypes (assemblages A and B) for which humans are the major host but which are also capable of infecting other animals. In this study two- step nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol was used to amplify the triose phosphate isomerase (TPI) gene which was further characterized with restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequenced. Except host adapted assemblages found in dogs we have found high prevalence of zoonotic assemblages in cattle, calves, lambs and sheep. These data confirm that zoonotic assemblages of G. duodenalis from wide spectrum of different animals could be potentially infective for humans in Croatia.
