Sažetak
Although much of the recent research into the cross-linguistic availability of various types of metonymies seems to indicate that most subtypes of referential metonymies, unlike predicational ones, are attested almost universally, some authors still find evidence that this is not always the case. Among others, Brdar and Brdar-Szabo (2003) noted a marked tendency to avoid in Croatian and Hungarian papers the use of their respective capital, Zagreb and Budapest, in the metonymy of the type CAPITAL-FOR-GOVERNMENT. In our paper we argue that in this specific case instead of the metonymy of the type CAPITAL-FOR-GOVERNMENT the Croatian language more readily employs the metonymy of the type PLACE-FOR-INSTITUTION to achieve the same communicative goal. Furthermore we analyze a number of factors related to the TV/newspaper reporter who serves as a deictic center in the less frequent cases when Zagreb is used as a metonymic vehicle in the metonymy CAPITAL-FOR-GOVERNMENT in Croatian. Possible factors include the reporter`s whereabouts (abroad or home), whether his/her or somebody else`s standpoint on the issue is being reported etc. The analysis is based on a corpus consisting of newspaper articles and examples from TV reports by Croatian and English foreign and home correspondents. One of the major factors governing the use of the above metonymy is expected to be the conceptual metaphor CONCEPTUAL DISTANCE IS DISTANCE IN PHYSICAL SPACE.
