Sažetak
Prisoners in all 12 prisons in Croatia were surveyed from October 2004 to June 2005 to see the structure of prison population and to study the prevalence of bloodborn viruses among them. Subjects voluntarily completed a questionnaire and provided blood specimens for testing antibodies to HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), HBV and HDV markers. The total number of individuals in Croatian prison system is about 3.000. About 2.800 men, 70 women and about 130 minors and younger adults. We analysed 2.350 men (78, 3 %) and 70 women (100, 0%). All sera were tested for: HbsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HCV and anti-HIV. Those positive for anti-HBc were additionaly tested for anti-HD. Among prisoners we identified groups of: IV drug users (18, 9%) ; highly promiscuous individuals (HPI) (6, 6%) ; alcoholics (15, 6%) ; individuals with psychiatric diseases and personality disorders (PDPD) (9, 7%) ; 35, 7% of prisoners did not give information and 18, 3% did not belong to any of the groups. In total 24, 9% of prisoners were positive for some markers for viral hepatitis (HBV: 12, 8% ; HCV: 7, 5% ; HBV/HCV: 4, 7%). HBV and HCV infection were more prevalent among women than men (HBV: 26, 3% vs 11, 6% ; HCV: 12, 8 vs 7, 1%). HBV infection was very high among: IV drug users (33, 8%) and HPI (29, 7%), and relatively high among alcoholics (15, 7%) and individuals with PDPD (17, 4%). HCV infection was very high among IV drug users (48, 9%), relatively high among HPI (3, 6%) and surprisingly high among individuals with PDPD (9, 5 %). HDV and HIV infecton was very low: 0, 08% and 0, 12%. One fourth of all prisoners have contact with HBV, HCV or both viruses ; it seems that alcoholics and individuals with PDPD could be an additional risk population for these viral infections ; significantly higher percentage of HBV and HCV infection is recorded among women than in men.
