Sažetak
Purpose: We analyzed drinking water hardness and its possible effect on etiology of cardiovascular diseases in population of three Croatian islands: Vis, Lastovo and Mljet. Methods: Sample was composed of 364 examinees of both genders. We analyzed physical and chemical characteristics of water. Also, out of the examinees physiological parameters we examined body mass index and blood pressure, and out of biochemical parameters: total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, uric acid and creatinin. Results: Results of biochemical analysis of blood samples for some parameters corresponded with average values in the population and some of parameters show deviations. Water quality mainly corresponded with maximum allowed values regarding physical and chemical parameters, with exception of total water hardness as important topic of this research. Conclusion: Population with diagnosed cardiovascular diseases used water for drinking with higher concentration of calcium and higher electrical conductivity. Magnesium concentration did not show as predictor on development of cardiovascular diseases in examined population.
