Sažetak
The obtained results make part of the scientific research project „ History of Social Work in Eastern Europe“ . Work of organizations and professions at the beginning of the 20th century having elements of what today is called social work will be presented. Important influence of organized education on the development of social works as a profession will be stressed. Reasons of the time gap between the different activities that can be regarded as the forthcoming, but also real social work at the beginning of 20th century and the foundation of the first educational program for social work at the beginning of the 50ties will be analyzed. Study and knowledge of the history and development path of social work as a profession can be used as a source of information for the present, very turbulent, moment in the Croatian society. Knowledge about the pre-social work activities and development of the profession gives an insight into the improvement that the profession has made during the last 100 years, but also problems, dilemmas and questions that persist through time and influence social work as a profession. Therefore, one of the objectives of this presentation is the critical review on the development of the social work profession in Croatia. The term social work has been applied much longer than the profession itself. This term was used for different activities of charity and church organizations which aim was to help poor, sick and needy members of society. The development of the profession will be considered through three periods: 1) from 1900-1941 - charity actions run by church and civil society organizations ; 2) from 1941 -1952 - war period ; 3) 1952 onward- development of education for social work and social work as a profession. The presentation will also point to the gender perspective in the development of social work in Croatia.
