Sažetak
The unaesthetic lesions present on the skin of patients can influence their psyche and self-esteem, especially if the disease is chronic as in the case of psoriasis. It is well known that alcohol consaumption and smoking are positively associate with the severity of psoriasis vulgaris. We investigated the drinking habits and cigarette smoking habits in 150 patients with psoriasis vulgaris (98 male and 52 female) by means of interview and a questionnaire and comparing the results with a control group. Among the psoriatics 82,6% had psoriasis vulgaris, while 17,3% were afflicted with the severe forms: psoriasis arythrodermica, psoriasis arthropathica or psoriasis pustulosa. Among the psoriatics 42.6% were drinkers, while in the control group there were only 8.0% (p<0.05). Especially males drank more frequently, but there were no significant differences between patients with stress in history and patients without it. Excessively drinking aggravate the disease in patients with psoriasis. They also had more frequently recurrences and need long lasting hospitalization. The determination of the liver tests (gamma GT, ALS, AST and bilirubin) demonstrated that the abuse of alcohol is associated with alterations of the tests, compared to the control group. Regarding cigarette smoking, patients with psoriasis smoked more frequently (47%) that patients of the control group (36.0%). In conclusion, the investigation demonstrated that alcoholism and smoking in patients with psoriasis represent an important problem which can influence the course of the disease. With these aspects must be aware not only dermatologists but also psychiatrists and general practitioners.
