The aim of the paresent study was assess the effect of smoking on serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and peripheral blood eosinophilis in patients with atopic dermatitis. The diagnosis was based on the criteria proposed by Hanifin and Rajka. Enrolled were 60 patients with atopic dermatitis, aged 17-50 years and treated at the Dermatologic Clinic. They were divided into two age-and sex-matched groups: 30 smokers and 30 nonsmokers. Eosinophil count and total IgE (phadiatop) were determined in all study patients. Eosinophilia was observed in 22 (72%) patients from the cigarette smoking group, and in 18 (60%) nonsmokers. The mean value was 6.7+- 5.1 in smokers vs. 6.1+-4.9 in nonsmokers. The difference was not significant (p>0.005). An increased serum level of IgE was found in 83% of smokers compared to 70% of nonsmokers. The highest levels were found in the patients who also has other atopic diseases, expecially those of the respiratory system. The results supported the opinion that cigarette smoking may influence some immunologic parameters and induce an increase in eosinophilis and IgE in blood.
