Sažetak
In the calculation of the influence of the surface plasmon modes on the Casimir energy between two plane parallel metallic mirrors, Intravaia and Lambrecht [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 110404 (2005)] made a natural extension of the upper surface mode to the photonic modes sector. Although one expects that this well known procedure will not change the qualitative results, it turns out that in the Casimir effect it has a significant impact on the surface vs the photonic contributions to the total Casimir energy. As a consequence, only the true surface modes give a good approximation to the total Casimir energy even at relatively large distances between the mirror plates.
