Sažetak
Purpose There has been increasing evidence of association between periodontal disease in pregnancy and preterm birth. Following this line of research, we analysed the periodontal status in a cohort of pregnant women (n = 147) in order to compute possible risk for preterm birth and test the hypothesis that periodontal disease might be considered as a marker for preterm delivery. Methods By determining the periodontal status of delivering women together with some additional variables related to pregnancy we analysed the possibility of preterm birth. By computing post-delivery odds ratio we were able to confirm or reject the prediction made prior to delivery. Results Post-delivery analysis revealed significant differences in periodontal status between mothers with full time delivery and mothers with preterm delivery (P < 0.05), together with significant differences in other variables (smoking, age, socio-economic status ; P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the prediction made pre-delivery and actual delivery data, confirming the hypothesis that periodontal disease might be considered as a marker for preterm delivery in a given cohort. Conclusions Our results contribute to the growing evidence that periodontal disease can influence pregnancy and that treatment of periodontal disease might be considered as a preventive procedure for preterm birth. Relevance The findings of this study confirm the fact that programs for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease should be incorporated in the health program for pregnant women.
