Sažetak
Early Medieval Dubrovnik can be defined by the customary syntagm "bishop's city". At the beginning, the share of Church hierarchy in the secular rule was considerable, which is another heritage of the late Antic times. Status of Bishopric centre meant the affirmation of civic law of Dubrovnik in the centuries on the border of Antic times and Middle Ages and it was one of the pillars on which the commune was founded. In the communal period the archbishop does not hold the same position in the city government as before, but together with other clergy still partakes in political decision making. From the thirteenth century on, the strengthening of institutions of secular government is evident, as well as expropriation of the archbishop and clergy. With the disappearance of communal institutions and the founding of an aristocratic republic (14th and 15th century) that process developed much further. The aristocratic government formulated a relationship with the Papacy, affects the election of archbishops, decided on the choice of suffragan bishops and other church prelates, as well as ordinary priests, managed church estates, oversaw church possessions and judiciary. The predominance of temporal over spiritual rule was also evident on a symbolic level: the patriciate manages the reliquaries and influences religious ceremonies. In the article, the relationship of secular and spiritual hierarchy of Dubrovnik, and above all the position of the archbishop, is observed in the context of the relationship between the clergy and laymen, primarily on political and legal, but also on religious, ritual and symbolic level.
