Sažetak
Part one of the paper presents some of the most prominent theories of reading, as well as some important research-based insights into the assessment of reading. This provides the theoretical background for the research into the reading comprehension in English as the first foreign language that was carreid out with grade 7 children in a primary school in Vinkovci. The results of the research are presented both in relation to the overall test performance and particular tasks. When compared with the results of the research into the reading skill carried out within the 'English Language in Croatia' project, the findings indicate that the applied test may be used as a reliable measure of the level of the reading skill in the final years of a primary-school education.
