In the Mediterranean, bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is subjected to an intensive fishing pressure that has been partially caused by the aim to catch and transfer fish to farms, raising questions concerning the proper stock management and survival. Some facilities involved in tuna fattening were faced with the unavailability of larger fish categories and the necessity of process prolongation, thus starting to rear tuna up to 2.5 years. Whereas during the fattening process diseases did not represent threat for the production, in rearing process, some microorganisms emerged as serious pathogens, able to devastate large parts of the stock. Most laboratories involved in studying tuna health in Mediterranean are still unconnected under the EU framework project, even the collaboration at some level already exists. Unknown epizootiological situation in most tuna farms, represent an excellent ground for the easy potential outbreak and spread of a new or uncontrollable pathogen. Even though parasitofuana of caught fish is reach and abundant, it mainly shows a benign character, with the tendency of sharp decrease during the first couple of months in the rearing system. The major component of the parasite community are members of the family Didymozoidae. Most of parasitic pathogens determined as serious threats in Australian reared stocks, so far were not isolate in Mediterranean (Uronema nigricans) or were found in a negligible number (Cardicola forsteri, Hexosoma thynni). Mortalities are usually results of the long-lasting synergy of many coupled zootechnical factors, primarily misbalanced and poor diet, with sudden changes in the environment (temperature, storm, forest fire). Secondary bacterial pathogens (Photobacterium sp., Vibrio sp., Aeromonas sp.) are isolated from moribund or dead fish, while parasitofauna is not implicated in the pathology onset. Mild fungal infections were observed, while no viral pathogens were suspected or isolated. Recent isolation of nodavirus from Japanese tuna stocks puts under serious consideration the practice to rear sea bass and sea bream altogether with tuna cages.
